This is why ‘Grand Theft Auto 6’ still doesn’t have a release date

The boss of Grand Theft Auto 6’s publisher Take-Two has revealed why the game still doesn’t have a release date.

Grand Theft Auto 6 was officially unveiled in December 2023 with a brief teaser trailer. The video, soundtracked by Tom Petty’s ‘Love Is A Long Road’, confirmed the game would return players to the world of Vice City and introduced us to the dual Bonnie & Clyde-inspired protagonists – Jason and Lucia.

Since then, Rockstar hasn’t revealed any more details about the game, which is still expected to be released sometime this year. Some fans have examined how Rockstar has advertised previous games and believe a second trailer will be shared next month.

However Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick has said the company is doing things differently this time around.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Zelnick acknowledged the hype around Grand Theft Auto 6 is “the greatest anticipation [he’s] ever seen for an entertainment property” but added that “we want to maintain the anticipation and the excitement.”

“We do have competitors who will describe their release schedule for years in advance, and we found that the better thing to do is to provide marketing materials relatively close to the release window in order to create that excitement on the one hand, and balance the excitement with unmet anticipation,” he continued. “I don’t always get it exactly right, but that’s what we’re trying to do.”

Earlier this year, Zelnick said he was feeling “good” about Grand Theft Auto 6 coming out in autumn 2025 despite rumours of a delay. He also promised the game would be “worth waiting for”.

“I think it will be extraordinary,” he continued. “We definitely listen to feedback from fans but remember, the biggest hits are always the ones that are unexpected. Everything we do has to be new and different, not derivative. I think it will be breathtaking”.

In other news, it’s been reported that pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 will go live later this week, following a Direct presentation.
