Tributes paid after death of pioneering grime producer Terror Danjah: “One of the greatest to ever do it”

Tributes are being paid to pioneering grime producer Terror Danjah, dubbed as “one of the greatest to ever do it”, who has died.

The news was shared by fellow grime musician D Power Diesle, who made a post on X yesterday (February 10). “God bless all his family, I will let you know when I know more,” it read.

Robert Luis, the founder of his label Tru Thoughts, made a lengthy post today (February 11) confirming the news of Terror Danjah’s (real name Rodney Pryce) death. “Rest In Peace to Terror Danjah,” it reads. “It is very sad to hear the news of his passing. Everyone at Tru Thoughts sends condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and anyone effected by the news.”

It continued: “He was a pioneering and influential producer helping lay the foundations and creativity within Grime with many releases, as well as pushing his own R&G genre with R&B singers over Grime productions. He has been and will remain an important part of music culture.”

Born in East London, Pryce is widely considered to be one of the greatest grime producers of all time and has produced for names such as Kano, D Double E and Ghetts.

Born to Jamaican parents, the producer was surrounded by soundsystem culture which influenced his taste. He started out as a member of N.A.S.T.Y. Crew, and then his tracks were released by labels such as Hyperdub, Planet Mu and his own Hardrive Records.

He was credited as being one of the main drivers of the R&G (rhythm and grime) movement, which combined elements of grime with R&B. Over the years as his influence grew, he collaborated with artists including Wiley, Dizzee Rascal, and Tinie Tempah.

Pryce’s peers and fans have been paying tribute to him, and sending well wishes to his family and loved ones. Rapper and TV presenter Big Zuu called the producer “a very kind soul who always had time for the mandem and just wanted to see us win. Sending prayers and blessings to your family.”

Hudson Mohawke called him “one of [his] faves”, and DJ Opium Hum called him “one of the greatest to ever do it”. Meanwhile, DJ Kush Jones called his style “truly unique.”

Producer and DJ Plastician wrote: “Such a talented producer and a great human being to boot. He’s never left my crates. Never will.” Rapper Trillary Banks wrote: “Heaven gained not just an angel but a UK legend”, while another MC, Manga Saint Hilare, wrote: “What you’ve created & taught so many will live forever.”
