‘True Detective’ season five setting revealed

The setting for the new season of hit anthology drama True Detective has been revealed by HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film Francesca Orsi.

In an interview with Deadline, Orsi said: “It’s set in New York, in Jamaica Bay”. She also said showrunner Issa Lopez has a complex story lined up, saying: “Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful”.

While no stars have been announced for the season, Orsi said writing was underway. “I’m really excited about it. We have a small writers room going with Issa; she’s excited” she said. “We just gave notes on the first two episodes, the entire season. Honestly, I can’t wait for this to go. It’s all about casting and getting this ready”.

She confirmed that the season is set to premiere in 2027.

Beginning in 2014, True Detective follows a different case and different characters for each season. The first starred Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey and was set in Louisiana.

The second season saw Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams solve mysteries in California; while the third took place in the Ozarks region of the US and starred Oscar winner Mahershala Ali.

In 2024, the show returned after a five-year hiatus for True Detective: Night Country, starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as officers investigating sudden disappearances in Alaska. Foster won a Golden Globe and an Emmy for her performance, the first actor in the series to do so.

In a five-star review of the latest season, NME wrote: “This iteration of True Detective is a female-driven return to form that weaves supernatural elements and a sensitive mental health narrative into a riveting and intricate detective story.”

At January’s Golden Globes ceremony, Foster’s acceptance of the award was briefly halted by losing nominee Sofia Vergara, who jokingly heckles her win from the audience.
