U2 Concert Film Chronicling Inaugural Sphere Residency Run Coming ‘Soon’
If you weren’t able to make it out to Las Vegas for U2‘s christening of the Sphere venue last year or earlier this year, you are in luck. V-U2 An Immersive Concert Film at Sphere Las Vegas chronicling the band’s concert run at the venue is on its way, and aims to give fans the feeling of actually attending the shows, the Sphere Entertainment Co. announced on Wednesday (Aug. 21).
“The goal was to give the immersive moviegoers as close to the live U2:UV concert experience as possible — and then some,” The Edge said in a statement. “I’ve never seen a U2 show. I’m so relieved I caught a great one.”
In a cheekily vague emoji tease on X on Tuesday night, the band posted a pair of emoji eyeballs in reaction to an announcement the day before from the venue that featured a series of emoji including a film camera, a bucket of popcorn and an arrow over the word “soon.”
The concert film is directed by The Edge and Morleigh Steinberg, and premieres at the Sphere on Sept. 5. Fans who are subscribers of U2.com will get the first shot at tickets, which will be available on presale from Thursday, Aug. 22, at 10 a.m. PT, to Friday, Aug. 23, 9 a.m. PT via Ticketmaster. General onsale kicks off Aug. 23 at 10 a.m. PT.
In March, the Las Vegas Journal-Review reported that U2 singer Bono told the sold-out crowd at the 40th and final U2: UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere show at the venue that the end of the band’s run — which kicked off on Sept. 29 and wrapped on March 2 — was not the the last word. “We are filming tonight. This is the show that people will see after we all go home. In the future, people will watch us, watching you … Give the future a wave,” he said.
Following U2’s inaugural run at the 20,000-seat, $2.3 billion venue with a 16K wraparound interior LED screen and iconic 580,000 square foot exterior LED display, Phish swooped in for a four-show stint in April, which then gave way to a 30-show stay-put by fellow jam giants Dead & Company. The Eagles will launch a 20-show residency on Sept. 20, followed by a six-show December run by EDM act Anyma.
