Veteran South Korean actress Kim Soo-mi dies, aged 75
South Korean actress Kim Soo-mi has died of cardiac arrest.
On October 25, Korea Times reported the 75-year-old actress was found unconscious at her home by her son earlier that morning. She was later transported to Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at its emergency room.
Police in Seoul are currently investigating the exact circumstances behind her death.
Kim was previously hospitalised in May and July this year due to fatigue. As a result, the actress went on hiatus to focus on recuperating. She had been starring in the musical My Mother at the time of her hospitalisation.
Kim first made her acting debut in 1970 after participating in a talent show. She later shot to fame in the MBC drama series Country Diaries (1980-2002) for her portrayal of a mother in her seventies, despite only being in her thirties at the time.
She went on to star in hundreds of South Korean films and television shows, including Barefoot Ki-bong (2006), Late Blossom (2011) and Incarnation of Money (2013). Last year, Kim led the comedy film Family Glory: Returns, a part of the Marrying the Mafia franchise.
Her last project was the film Ghost Police, which is still in production. The project notably saw her reuniting with former Barefoot Ki-bong and Marrying the Mafia co-star Shin Hyun-joon for the first time in 11 years.
The actress was also known for her culinary skills, and often appeared on cooking shows like Mother’s Touch, Soomi’s Side Dishes and more.
