The Spanish-American singer-songwriter is on this week’s (October 7) edition of The Cover, a renewal of NME’s commitment to supporting emerging talent across the globe on a weekly basis. Every week, a rising artist will feature on The Cover – you can read the profile of Victoria Canal here, written by Tilly Foulkes and featuring photography by Bella Howard.
The story is accompanied by an exclusive playlist compiled by Canal that shares some of the songs she’s been listening to as autumn takes hold in parts of the world. Among the tracks on the playlist are songs by Billie Eilish, Remi Wolf, Doja Cat, Mitski, The 1975, and more. Listen to the full playlist on Spotify below and on Apple Music.
In her Cover story, Victoria Canal looks back on her journey from playing covers in restaurants as a teen to joining Coldplay on stage during their Glastonbury headline set earlier this year – and the obstacles she’s faced along the way. “I just decided I was gonna use [that] rejection as fuel, to the fire, like: ‘No. I do have what it takes to make a living from what I love,’” she tells NME of one perspective-altering incident. “And I’m so glad I had that experience because I think it’s important to experience rejection to know what it is that you really want.”
The musician also looks ahead to her debut album, ‘Slowly, It Dawns’, which is due for release on January 17, 2025 and has already been previewed by a handful of singles, like the piano-led pop of ‘June Baby’ and the sultry ‘California Sober’. “It’s been a long time coming for a full-length, but I’m gonna be doing this for my whole life,” she promises. “There’s still many, many, many albums left in me. No matter what happens, I’ll be making music forever.”
