Djo has covered Haim‘s single ‘Gasoline’ as part of a new radio session – check out the videos below.

The actor and musician – aka Joe Keery, who plays Steve Harrington in Stranger Things – recently visited Triple J to record a track for the station’s ‘Like A Version’ series. He is currently out in Australia following appearances at Laneway Festival.

Djo and his live band opted for a laid-back, groovy cover of Haim’s track ‘Gasoline’, which appears on the LA trio’s third and latest album, 2020’s ‘Women In Music Pt. III’.

“I love that album,” Keery explained. “I think they’re such great artists – I love that they’re sisters, and they make music together. I’ve got a big family and my song that we played, ‘Basic…’, my sisters are singing on that. So I thought it would be sort of cool to pay homage to [Haim] for that reason.”

He continued: “I think what I connect to is like, there’s a little edge in the song. And I feel like sometimes in my own personal life, I don’t allow myself to express that edge. But through the song, I feel like I can kind of live in that for a second, and it feels good.”

Keery went on to explain how he and the band approached “making it our own” when working on the Haim cover.

“It was a fun experience to me,” he said. “Yeah, I hope they like it and just shout out to them. I hope they’re making new music soon because we deserve another album from them. We’re overdue.”

You can watch the cover and interview with Djo above, as well as his live rendition of ‘Basic Being Basic’ from Djo’s upcoming third album ‘The Crux’ (out April 4).

Djo is due to head out on the road in North America, the UK and Europe later this year in support of the record. Find any remaining tickets here (US/Canada) and here (UK/Ireland).

Speaking to NME last year, Djo opened up about his viral hit song ‘End Of Beginning’. “Basically it’s a reflection on my time in my early twenties living in Chicago, where I went to college and graduated and played in a few bands,” he said. “I was kind of in the music scene [but also] waiting tables and auditioning for commercials and stuff.

“And I guess it’s about how I was on the precipice of a big change in my life, but I was so anxious to live out my future that maybe I didn’t realise what a special time I was in.”

In that same conversation, Keery talked about his love of Charli XCX, and discussed potential future collaborators. You can revisit the full video interview for NME‘s In Conversation series above.

Meanwhile, Keery will be happy to see that Haim are teasing their long-awaited comeback single. “We are back baby, we are fucking back,” a voiceover said in a recent video of the trio. Another post included the caption: “(ha)i’m single.. haim single?”

In other news, Stranger Things fans were given a first look at the fifth and final season last year. The show marked the halfway point of production over the summer, before wrapping on its last-ever outing in late December.
