Watch Griff’s synthy cover of Charli XCX’s ‘Apple’ for ‘Like A Version’
Griff has shared a sparkly and glittery cover of Charli XCX‘s ‘Apple’ for triple j‘s Like A Version series – watch the performance below.
Today (August 30), triple j has shared Griff’s enthralling take on the popular ‘Brat’ cut, recorded during her recent visit to Australia. The cover sees Griff and her backing band deliver an ethereal version of the hit song with a heavy emphasis on dreamy synths and wavy cymbals.

Griff has also spoken about her decision to cover the track, telling triple j in a follow-up interview: “I just think that what Charli’s done with this album and with ‘Brat’ has been so inspiring.”
She added: “It’s been such a cultural movement and as a fellow female pop girl, I love it. I’m a big fan of it. I think pop can be so saturated with the usual, same-old lyrics but when you listen to ‘Apple’ you’re a bit like ‘hang on a second’, and then you listen to it again and you realise there’s more layers to it.”
“I just think she knows how to be an artist, she doesn’t seem like she cares about what people think really in a sense that she just does what she wants to do. There’s such a style and a uniqueness to Charli’s writing and attitude that I love.”
In July, Griff released her debut album ‘Vertigo’, which scored a four-star review from Kayleigh Watson, who wrote for NME: “‘Vertigo’ is a diaristic tale of scaling mountainous fear, traversing back to her naive youth spent making music in her bedroom – and welcoming a new chapter with newfound courage.”
As for Charli XCX, the artist has experienced an exhilarating summer following the release of her latest album ‘Brat’ – check out NME‘s complete timeline of Charli’s Brat summer below.
Last week, Charli XCX teased a new remix on TikTok as she prepares to head into “Brat Autumn”. The new track appears to sample Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Dreams’ and would follow on from the Billie Eilish-featuring remix of ‘Guess’. She has also since teased that she has been working in the studio alongside the likes of Bon Iver and Danielle Haim, and that a “full-length other project,” is in the works but didn’t confirm if it would be a remix album. “But it’s definitely in the bratosphere, so to speak,” she said.
In a four-star review of ‘Brat’, NME wrote: “It all paints a picture of who XCX is in 2024. Growing pains, grief and aching doubts come alongside self-confidence, celebration and the knowledge of the place XCX holds in the musical landscape – indeed, she kicks off ‘360’ with the knowing: “I went my own way and I made it / I’m your favourite reference baby”.
“With ‘Brat’, XCX demonstrates that going her own way will always sound pretty good.”
