Watch Hozier cover The Band with Mavis Staples, Joan Baez and more at Newport Folk Festival
Hozier covered The Band‘s song ‘The Weight’ with Mavis Staples, Joan Baez and more at the Newport Folk Festival last week. See the footage below.
The Irish singer-songwriter played a headline set at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island last Friday (July 26).
Per Setlist.FM, Hozier was joined on stage by a host of guests to deliver a live rendition of The Band’s 1968 track ‘The Weight’ towards the end of the show. Appearing alongside the artist were Staples, Baez, The Lumineers, Nathaniel Rateliff, Madison Cunningham, Allison Russell and more.
Following the collaboration, Baez performed her timely protest song ‘We Shall Overcome’ with Hozier, Rateliff, Russell and others. Check out the fan-shot videos below.
Hozier has since shared a professional video captured at the event on social media, alongside a message of thanks.
“I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be reminded of everything @Newport Folk Fest offers through its legacy, and through the space it can create for these moments,” he wrote in the caption.
“I’m so grateful to @Mavis Staples and @Joan Baez and the artists of their generation who lit a torch that still lights the way, and I am so grateful for the artists of my own generation who inspire me everyday. Thank you so much for joining me.
“Thank you to my dear friend @Allison Russell, it was a joy to be with you for your set. Thank you @Kaïa Kater, @Nathaniel Rateliff, @William Prince, Wes @The Lumineers and @Madison Cunningham. I am truly honoured to have had you with me! So much love and gratitude.”
In the comments section, Russell replied: “I will remember and cherish the memory of this as long as I live. So much love and gratitude for inviting me into this magic circle @Hozier .”

Back in 2019, Hozier worked with Staples on his second album ‘Wasteland, Baby!’. Additionally, the pair joined forces on stage at that year’s edition of the Newport Folk Festival.
Hozier has also previewed an upcoming song called ‘July’ online. He has confirmed that a new EP is “coming soon”, following on from his previous four-track collection ‘Unheard’ – which was released in March, and features a team-up with Allison Russell.
‘Unheard’ marked the first body of material from Hozier since he dropped his third studio record ‘Unreal Unearth’ last August. The LP earned the musician his first UK Number One album.
In a four-star review, NME wrote: “Hozier not only navigates different genres on ‘Unreal Unearth,’ but chooses between moments of sparseness, like the minimalist ‘To Someone From A Warm Climate (Uiscefhuarithe)’ while also making space for expansive tracks.”
