Alanis Morissette enlisted the help of MUNA to sing her 1996 hit ‘Ironic’ this weekend. Check out the footage below.

The Los Angeles pop trio were welcomed on stage during Morisette’s headline set at Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago yesterday (July 21).

“I’m going to need some help singing the beginning of ‘Ironic’ tonight,” Morissette told the crowd, as her performance drew to a close. “MUNA who graced the stage earlier this evening.”

Earlier in the day, Muna had given Morissette a shout-out during their own set. The trio, comprised of Katie Gavin, Josette Maskin, and Naomi McPherson, are long-time fans, having previously remixed Morissette’s 2020 single ‘Ablaze‘.

When the trio walked on stage, it was an exchange of admiration, with Gavin bowing down and saying: “We love you so much! Alanis Morissette, everybody!”, to which Morissette responded: “I love you.”

Check out the footage below.

In 2020, Morissette revealed that initially didn’t want to include ‘Ironic’ on her seminal 1995 album ‘Jagged Little Pill. “I didn’t even want it on the record,” Morissette told Rolling Stone Music Now podcast. “And I remember a lot of people going, ‘Please please, please.’ So I said, ’Ok’. That was one of the first songs we wrote, almost like a demo to get our whistles wet. But people wound up really liking the melody, and I wasn’t that precious about it”.

She added that she “came to realise later” that perhaps she should have been more careful about agreeing to put the song on her 1995 album since she’s put up with decades of “shaming” over the song’s incorrect use of the word ‘ironic’.

Morissette is currently midway through ‘The Triple Moon Tour’ with Joan Jett & The Blackhearts. The tour will stop off in Missouri, Ohio and Colorado this month, before wrapping up in Inglewood, California on August 10. You can find any remaining tickets here.
