Watch NewJeans’ Hyein cover Mariya Takeuchi’s ‘Plastic Love’ live
Hyein of K-pop girl group NewJeans recently covered Mariya Takeuchi’s iconic 1985 city pop single ‘Plastic Love’.
Last night (June 26), NewJeans held the first of two shows of their 2024 ‘Bunnies Camp’ fan concert at the Tokyo Dome in Japan. During the show, each member of the K-pop girl group surprised the audience with solo performances.
Notably, Hyein sang a cover of Mariya Takeuchi’s ‘Plastic Love’, which was first released in 1985 but has since seen a resurgence due to increased interest in city pop. The concert is notably the K-pop star’s first performance since sustaining a foot injury last month.
In fan-captured videos, NewJeans’s Hyein is accompanied by a live band for the performance. “Never truly love me / Love is just a game / If you enjoy it, that’s enough / Decorating my closed heart / With flashy dresses and shoes / Lonely friends,” she sings.
Meanwhile, members Hanni and Minji performed covers of ‘Aoi Sangoshou’ by Matsuda Seiko and ‘Odoriko’ by Vaundy respectively. Japanese-British singer Rina Sawayama, who will be a guest performer at tonight’s (June 27) show posted an Instagram story of herself dancing to Hanni’s performance.
Danielle performed a solo track called ‘Butterfly’ which was reportedly composed by the NewJeans member. Meanwhile, Haerin opted for a solo dance performance.
NewJeans’ Tokyo Dome concerts come just days after the group made their official Japanese debut with their single album ‘Supernatural’, which was released in partnership with Japanese artist Takashi Murakami
Prior to that, the group made a Korean comeback with their single album ‘How Sweet’ in May, which was accompanied by pre-release song ‘Bubblegum’ and its title track.
Before the concert yesterday, ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin was spotted in Shibuya taking pictures with a small crowd of fans. A clip of the interaction soon garnered over a million views on X, with many users commenting on the executive’s growing popularity amid an ongoing feud with HYBE.
