Watch P!nk perform ‘What About Us’ with daughter to close Democratic National Convention
P!nk rounded off the Democratic National Convention last night (August 22) by singing ‘What About Us’ with her daughter Willow – watch the footage below.
At the fourth and final day of the Convention in Chicago’s United Center, Vice President Kamala Harris officially accepted her party’s nomination for President, and amid a slew of rumours about which entertainment figures might appear, P!nk took up the mantle.
Speculation had been swirling throughout the day – and reported by TMZ – that Beyoncé would be showing up as a surprise guest, with some even suggesting that Taylor Swift might make an appearance.
As it was, P!nk and her 13-year-old daughter Willow Sage Hart performed a rousing version of the 2017 hit ‘What About Us’, alongside a guitarist and four backing singers. Watch the performance below.
Earlier in the day, The Chicks had performed the US national anthem a cappella before the assembly of political activists and campaigners, while the Convention had welcomed artists including Stevie Wonder, Lil Jon, Jason Isbell, Maren Morris and John Legend earlier in the week.
As Harris concluded her speech at the end of the night, she was played off by Beyoncé’s ‘Freedom’, the official anthem for her presidential campaign. Earlier this week Queen Bey had issued a cease-and-desist letter to Donald Trump’s campaign to prevent them from using the same song.
On Wednesday, Wonder had taken to the stage to show support for Harris. “We must keep on keeping on until we are truly a united people of these United States and then we will reach a higher ground,” he told the crowd in a speech before performing his song, ‘Higher Ground’.
Later that night, Legend was joined on stage by Sheila E to pay tribute to Prince via a performance of the late singer’s 1984 hit ‘Let’s Go Crazy’. The cover was a homage to Prince’s home state of Minnesota — the state where Vice Presidential Nominee Tim Walz serves as governor — and directly preceded Walz’s keynote address.
Stars from across the music industry have come out in support of Harris, including Ariana Grande, Lizzo and Olivia Rodrigo – the latter of whom highlighted the VP’s stance on reproductive rights.
Charli XCX endorsed Harris by posting: “Kamala IS brat”, a reference to her new hit album and pop culture phenomenon ‘Brat’. This led to CNN attempting to explain the ‘Brat summer’ trend to its viewers live on air.
Hulk Hogan, meanwhile, asked a crowd this week whether they want to see him “body slam” and “drop a leg” on Harris, before questioning her ethnicity.
The Democratic National Convention came ahead of the forthcoming US Presidential election, which will be held on November 5.
