Steve Aoki has announced that he and his wife Sasha Sofine are expecting their first child together – and he revealed the gender in a very on-brand way.

Aoki has become known for his cake-throwing antics, covering crowds that attend his DJ sets in dessert since 2011. He’s come under controversy through the years for the stunt, but has defended so-called “caking”, saying that it is a “tool of expression” in his live shows.

More recently, he employed the tactic for his child’s gender reveal. The DJ surprised fans during a gig at Barasti Beach in Dubai on Sunday (January 26) by welcoming his wife on stage and announcing they were having a baby.

He then slams his face into the cake which turns out to have blue frosting inside, as a screen behind the stage read “It’s a boy!”.

Aoki shared the moment on Twitter/X, calling it “the most important cake of my life”. Check it out below.

In 2013 Aoki came under fire for the extravagant gimmicks at his concerts when, during a show at San Diego’s Hard Rock Hotel, he jumped 20ft from a balcony onto a life raft in the crowd, and broke a fan’s neck.

The fan later sued Aoki and Hard Rock for £6.25m, after they refused to pay for her medical treatment or refund her for the two months she was unable to work following her injury.

Aoki settled out of court with the fan before the trial began, where a jury found a majority verdict of 10-2 in favour of Hard Rock. In 2016 he apologised for the incident.

Speaking to NME in 2023, Aoki considered whether his days of cake-throwing would ever come to an end. “It’s going to happen,” he told us. “I was thinking about at what point do I retire the cake but I don’t know. I mean, I follow demand so if the crowd wants it.

“They’re like crying for it and make these massive signs to hold up. How do you say no to that? You know? I’ve caked like 20,000 faces at this point. We have a six-page cake rider, we’ve mastered it.”
