In celebration of the 50th anniversary of his Twin Towers highwire stunt – an unauthorised walk between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City done on August 7th, 1974 – Petit took the opportunity to recreate it at Manhattan’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine.
The 74-year-old French artist walked across the tightrope as Sting sat down below and performed his tracks ‘Fragile’ and ‘Field Of Gold’ while accompanied by a live orchestra. Per Showbiz 411, the singer also closed out the night with a song titled ‘Let the Great World Spin’ from his upcoming musical about Petit.

Sadly, the artist would never be able to actually recreate his famous highwire stunt across the Twin Towers due to the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 which saw the collapse of both buildings. Speaking to the Associated Press about his performance, Petit shared that his aim was not to “remind people of the doomed day,” but to honour his remarkable feat and the legacy of the towers.
“It adds a certain significance when you discuss a legend or a piece of history, even when the object of that history is no longer present. That’s the miracle of memory,” he told the publication.
