Watch Vampire Weekend cover Fall Out Boy’s ‘Sugar, We’re Goin Down’
Vampire Weekend performed a brief cover of Fall Out Boy‘s classic single ‘Sugar, We’re Goin Down’ during a show in New York recently. Watch the footage below.
The NYC band played two homecoming gigs at Madison Square Garden last weekend (October 5 and 6) as part of their current North American tour in support of their latest album, ‘Only God Was Above Us’.
Recent concerts have seen Ezra Koenig and co. fire through quick covers of numerous famous tunes as part of their encore. Last month, they took on Chappell Roan’s hit ‘Hot To Go!’ in a nod to an ongoing viral trend.
That same performance included versions of classics by the likes of The Beatles, ABBA and Pulp. More recently, Vampire Weekend put their spin on songs by Elton John, Pearl Jam, Tears For Fears and The Strokes.
At their first MSG concert on October 5, the band treated the audience to a rendition of Fall Out Boy’s ‘Sugar, We’re Goin Down’ chorus. The short cover began with just Koenig singing and playing his electric guitar before drums and piano were introduced soon afterwards.
Fall Out Boy – who released ‘Sugar…’ in 2005 as the lead single from their second album, ‘From Under the Cork Tree’ – later responded on social media. They shared a fan-shot clip of the moment, captioning it: “Sugar we’re goin a-punk @vampireweekend.”

During their main set at the first MSG gig, Vampire Weekend covered Billy Joel’s ‘Scenes From An Italian Restaurant’ before airing a portion of his track ‘My Life’ in the encore. In July, Joel wrapped up his historic residency at Madison Square Garden that spanned 150 dates.
Vampire Weekend’s double-header at the venue followed their surprise pop-up show outside a bar on the streets of New York on October 3.

Vampire Weekend’s latest album ‘Only God Was Above Us’ scored a four-star review from NME, which read: “Despite its sentimental homages to the history of their hometown, ‘Only God Was Above Us’ isn’t a nostalgic album. Rather than adopting an overly rose tinted view of the past to cope with the present, Koenig seems to be fine with embracing that things just aren’t that great.”
