We won’t know if ‘GTA 6’ is delayed until next year, says former developer
A former Rockstar Games developer has debunked rumours of Grand Theft Auto 6 being delayed until 2026.
After a lot of speculation, Rockstar officially confirmed Grand Theft Auto 6 with a record-breaking teaser trailer at the end of last year. The company hasn’t shared many more details about the game since though. So far, we know it’ll see characters return to Vice City and is scheduled for a 2025 release date.
However, the lack of updates has seen fans start to speculate that Grand Theft Auto 6 is due to be delayed.
Former developer Obbe Vermeij has taken to social media to tell fans not to worry about a delay just yet though. Vermeij, who worked at Rockstar while they shipped Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, San Andreas and GTA 4, explained to fans that the studio won’t be in a position to know if it needs to delay the game until early next year, so all talk of delay is pure speculation at this point.
“Rockstar is probably not in a position to determine whether they will hit 2025 until May-ish,” he wrote. “The decision to delay GTA 4 was made 4 months or so before the original release date. Any further and it’s hard to make the call.”
Vermeij added: “Grand Theft Auto 6 will sell for 10+ years and there is no competition to worry about. They are not going to release the game until they’re 100 per cent happy with it. No matter what it said in the trailer.”

Earlier this year, Rockstar scrapped remote working and left a number of developers “in limbo” about their future at the company. The following month, Grand Theft Auto publisher Take-Two Interactive laid off hundreds of staff and cancelled a number of titles as part of a “cost reduction program”. Following that turbulence, Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed he was “highly confident” GTA 6 would be released in 2025.
In August, a press release confirmed Grand Theft Auto 6 was still on track for an autumn 2025 release with momentum behind the release “continuing to build”. There is still no release window for the PC version of GTA 6.
In other news, the original creator of Flappy Bird has distanced himself from a planned revival.
