What is ‘Fridgescaping’? The ‘Bridgerton’-inspired TikTok trend that could be bad for your health

TikTok users have been jumping on the ‘Fridgescaping’ trend in recent weeks, many of them paying homage to Bridgerton, but what exactly is ‘Fridgescaping’?

The viral trend has seen countless users sharing images of the insides of their fridges online, with some of them choosing to invoke the period aesthetic of the Netflix romantic drama, the third season of which premiered on the streaming platform earlier this summer.

Some have been excited to get in on the act with ‘Fridgescaping’, while others are much more suspicious of its usefulness, or even hygienic safety. Read on for everything you need to know to understand the craze.

1. Start Small – It’s easy to go all in and go overboard immediately. You want the full effect and you know it will be so satisfying to see it all done. However, this won’t work for everyone. You may decide it’s inconvenient or you don’t eat your produce fast enough. Some simple and easy starters are a butter dish, egg crate and some simple bud vases with edible or food safe flowers. 2. Think About Food Storage – Food storage is complicated and even though you want to display everything, that doesn’t mean you should unless you’re prepared to eat it fast and strategically. Begin with some items stored properly, like herbs, asparagus, and celery in vases and change out the water every few days. Find pretty containers for items you need covered. If you want to display things, begin with items that do well in the open like apples. Berries out in the open are advanced and should not be done unless you plan to use them within two days. 3. Lead Testing – If you’re buying antiques, always lead test before storing food in them. A kit of 30 only costs $10. It’s worth every penny! I’ll be posting more in this series as there’s a lot I’d like to share, so keep your eyes peeled and feel free to ask questions in the interim. #fridgescaping #fridgescape #fridgescapingtips #organizationtips #fridgeorganization #refrigeratororganization #kitchenorganization #fridgegoals #fridgedecor #fridgestorage

What is ‘Fridgescaping’?

In essence, fridgescaping is concerned with taking the time and care to decorate the inside of your refrigerator – landscaping, but for your fridge.

Users can be as creative with their fridgescaping as they choose, with some opting for highly ornate food storage containers, and others incorporating standalone ornaments, picture frames, mirrors and figurines.

Replying to @sarahschneider550 This fridgerton refrigerator restock was honestly one of the most enjoyable things I’ve done in a while. I just started watching season 3 of Bridgerton, so what better time to romanticize my life with some fridgescaping? 😂 #fridgescaping #bridgerton #bridgertonnetflix #refrigeratororganization #refrigeratorrestock #restock @Netflix @Amazon Home @HomeGoods @anthro @Temu @House Beautiful

One sub-trend of the craze has been for users to invoke the Regency aesthetic of Bridgerton, dubbed ‘Fridgerton’, with wicker baskets and floral designs bringing some of the lush feel of the show to their kitchens.

How did ‘Fridgescaping’ begin?

The craze can be traced back to TikTok user Lynzi Judish, aka @linziliving. She had built a large following for posting videos of her innovating her New York home, but her reach rose to new levels when she turned her attention to the design of her fridge shelves.

Judish herself credits the term to lifestyle blogger Kathy Perdue, who is said to have coined the term in a 2011 post.

Is ‘Fridgescaping’ safe?

As reported by the Daily Mail, the UK’s Food Standards Agency have expressed their concerns about the hygienic safety of the trend.

The government watchdog has warned that items not commonly associated with food or its packaging could be a health hazard, and stressed the importance of keeping fresh produce in sealed bags or contains to avoid contamination.

It also reminds members of the public that fridges should be kept at between 0 and 5 degrees Celsius and that raw food should be kept covered at all times.

A Hobbit refrigerator has been my most requested fridgescape theme ever, so I went on a quest to tackle it. I’ve honesty been very nervous because I really wanted to do it justice for everyone. I was heavily influenced by Bilbo Baggins’ kitchen in The Hobbit right down to the doilies! This was also very similar in a lot of ways to Outlander with the very primitive style dishware and fresh herbs and plethora of textures. It was very fun to create as I’m currently vibing the natural texture in the refrigerator. I wish I had been recording, but when Dave opened the refrigerator he was so excited. It’s his favorite one yet. I love getting his refrigerator stamp of approval. 😭😭 Side note: the bread was eaten for dinner. It’s fine, I promise. 😂 I also forgot the potatoes. 😭 #theshire #shire #thehobbit #hobbithouse #hobbitcore #hobbithome #lordoftherings #fridgescaping #fridgescape #refrigeratororganization #fridgeorganization #kitchenorganization #kitchendecor

What other trends have been big on TikTok recently?

Fridgescaping follows on from the recent ‘Demure’ TikTok trend, the brainchild of content creator Jools Lebron, who made a series of videos that stressed the qualities of remaining “demure” and “mindful” in public situations.

Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Lopez and Jenna Ortega were among the stars who were quick to jump on that particular meme, the latter doing so from the set of her new film Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

Another viral hit on the social media app this summer was the ‘Gen Z Boss And A Mini’ craze, in which people repeated a number of chanted phrases in unison.
