When is ‘Showtrial’ season three coming out?

With the second season of the BBC legal drama Showtrial wrapping up, when can fans of the show expect to see it return? Read on to find out.

The series debuted in 2021 as a standalone run of five episodes, starring Tracy Ifeachor and Celine Buckens, but the show was successful enough that it was then developed into an anthology format.

As a result, a second season, comprised of a new cast and a new set of characters, arrived this month. Adeel Akhtar (Utopia) starred as Sam, a troubled insomniac solicitor hired by Michael Socha’s (This Is England) Mitchell, an arrogant police officer who has been accused of killing the climate activist Marcus Calderwood (Barney Fishwick).

Showtrial was created and written by Ben Richards, who is known for writing on shows such as Cobra, Strike and The Tunnel. “I am very grateful to the BBC for the opportunity to explore another sensational trial which I hope will be just as entertaining as our first outing,” he said about getting to extend the show.

“I love writing Showtrial and I’m honoured to have a cast of such high quality to deliver it.”

All five episodes of season two of Showtrial were made available to stream via BBC iPlayer on October 6, while they are being broadcast weekly on BBC One on Sunday nights, with the final one set to be shown next week (November 3).

When is Showtrial season three coming out?

Given the nature of Showtrial’s anthology format, if it is to return for a third run, it is likely to revolve around a new storyline and a new cast of characters.

The BBC have not yet confirmed whether they have commissioned a new season yet, but the show’s executive producer Simon Heath did say at a Q&A in recent weeks that they are working on an idea for a third run of episodes, which he suggested would be “very different” from what the show has been so far.

“I mean, we’ve got an idea for a third season, and a particular way into a murder file that would be very different and would require a different set of characters,” he teased. “Maybe the BBC will commission both.”
