When is ‘The White Lotus’ season three set?
In its third season, The White Lotus continues to be one of the best shows on television.
Created by Mike White, the comedy drama series follows the exploits of guests and staff at the luxury White Lotus hotel resort chain in various locations around the world, with the first two seasons set in Hawaii and Sicily respectively.
The third season, set in Thailand, similarly features a mostly new ensemble cast, including Leslie Bibb, Carrie Coon, Walton Goggins, Sarah Catherine Hook, Jason Isaacs, Lalisa Manobal, Parker Posey, Aimee Lou Wood and Patrick Schwarzenegger.
While each season offers a standalone mystery, some narrative elements carry across, mostly through Jennifer Coolidge’s character Tanya McQuoid and her relationship with Greg, who is played by Jon Gries.
Is The White Lotus season 3 set after season 2?
The White Lotus season three’s place on the timeline is yet to be confirmed, but after episode two, we know the third season definitely takes place after season one. Beyond that, there’s also a lot of evidence to suggest it takes place after season two.
In season three episode two, Belinda (Natasha Rothwell), who appeared in the first season, recognises Greg (Jon Gries), who is now going under the name Gary. This suggests Belinda recognises him as Tanya McQuoid’s lover from the first season in Hawaii, debunking the idea that season three could be a prequel.
As for whether this is set after season two, Greg’s concealed identity might be the giveaway. While it’s unclear why Greg is going under the name Gary, the logical conclusion is that he’s hiding his identity after the death of his wife Tanya, who he plotted to kill so he could inherit her wealth. He appears to be living off this newfound wealth now in Thailand, with his new younger girlfriend Chloe (Charlotte Le Bon), suggesting all the events of season three take place after the season two finale where Tanya dies.
There is a compelling fan theory that season three takes place at the same time as season two, with Greg leaving Tanya behind in Sicily to hop to Thailand, but the majority of the evidence suggests this isn’t the case.
Has the creator said anything about the timeline?
Show creator Mike White appeared to confirm The White Lotus season three does take place after season two in an interview, with Greg living off Tanya’s fortune.
Speaking about Greg’s surprise return in season three to Time, White said: ‘I got excited, because I was like: This is how we can keep the Tanya storyline alive.”
In regards to Greg hiding out in Thailand, he added: “This is where he would end up, and this is the kind of situation he’d be in. You’ve done the deed… Was it all worth it?”
“These guys, there’s always a woman – usually a much-younger woman – in their life,” White said. “But you don’t get the sense that there are many other people.”
