How trading works in ‘Pokemon TCG Pocket’

Pokemon TCG Pocket Trading: Several Pokemon and cards can be seen

One feature curiously absent in Pokémon TCG Pocket at launch is trading. While you can use the Wonder Pick feature to pull a card from a pack opened by a friend, you aren’t able to properly trade duplicates or unique cards, yet.

So, when will trading actually come to Pokémon TCG Pocket? Here is what we know from The Pokemon Company directly and how it could work based off some of the other systems in the game right now.

‘Pokemon TCG Pocket’ trading release date

Trading will arrive in January 2025 in Pokémon TCG Pocket. This was confirmed by the official Pokémon TCG Pocket X account in mid-November and reiterated before the feature launched.

It could be that The Pokemon Company just wanted to give everyone some time to build out there collections before they start passing cards between each other. Trading initially will only let you transfer certain cards between players, not everything. However, in the official update on X mentioned above, The Pokemon Company does say this selection of cards will expand over time.

As more expansion sets get added, it will be interesting to see if you can trade cards between sets and across expansions, provided they meet the requirements. But we will need to wait for The Pokemon Company to properly detail this.

‘Pokemon TCG Pocket’ trading rules and restrictions

Trading has a number of rules and restrictions in Pokemon TCG Pocket, as confirmed by the game’s official Twitter/X account:

  • Trades can only be done between friends and between cards of the same rarity
  • Cards with a rarity of 1 diamond- 4 four diamonds and 1 star can be traded
  • Items will be consumed when trading
  • Only certain cards from Genetic Apex and Mythical Island can be traded initially

These rules are quite restrictive and means you will need to look online and add people to find specific trades. You can’t search for trades people request or put up. Additionally, the rarest cards will need to be found still, so you can’t easily get Gold or Rainbow full art cards.

These restrictions have been met with a lot of backlash from players, but it does seem like the developers are open to changes based on feedback.
