Xbox Game Pass is adding ‘Grand Theft Auto 5’ this April

Microsoft has confirmed Grand Theft Auto 5 is making a return to Xbox Game Pass later this month.

Grand Theft Auto 5 was released back in 2013 and first made an appearance on Xbox Game Pass in 2020. Since then, it’s been available sporadically on the subscription-based service for console gamers.

In January 2024, Grand Theft Auto 5 was removed from Game Pass but now Microsoft have confirmed the upgraded version of the game will be rejoining the service later this month. It’ll also be available for PC users via Xbox Game Pass for the very first time.

“If you’ve been missing the streets of Los Santos, I’m excited to share that Grand Theft Auto 5 is making its way back to Game Pass on April 15,” Senior Community Lead Megan Spurr wrote in a dedicated blog. “And for those of us who play on PC, I’m even happier to announce that GTA5 Enhanced will be playable with PC Game Pass, and includes the latest features, like Hao’s Special Works Vehicles and more.”

So far Microsoft has added Borderlands 3, All You Need Is Help and Still Wakes The Dead to Xbox Game Pass this month, with a number of other games coming over the next few weeks.

April 8 will see South Of Midnight join the service as a Day One release and on April 24, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33  will launch on Game Pass.

The return of Grand Theft Auto 5 to Game Pass comes ahead of the release of Grand Theft Auto 6. The highly-anticipated sequel was officially confirmed in December 2023 and is due for release at some point this year.

Earlier this week Strauss Zelnick, the boss of Grand Theft Auto 6’s publisher Take-Two, explained why fans haven’t seen a second trailer yet. “We do have competitors who will describe their release schedule for years in advance, and we found that the better thing to do is to provide marketing materials relatively close to the release window in order to create that excitement on the one hand, and balance the excitement with unmet anticipation,” he said.

It comes after Zelnick said he was feeling “good” about Grand Theft Auto 6 coming out in autumn 2025 despite rumours of a delay. He also promised the game would be “worth waiting for”.

In other news, pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 went live earlier today (April 4)  at a number of UK retailers – and they’ve already sold out.
